The Beldham explores the haunting depths of folklore and the fragile strength of motherhood in Angela Gulner’s chilling dark fantasy horror.
Irish folklore has long been a staple in horror, and filmmaker Angela Gulner taps into this ancient mystique with her grim dark fantasy horror, The Beldham. Gulner, who also wrote the screenplay, explores the enduring terror of ancient evil set against the challenges of modern motherhood, weaving themes of loss, grief, and resilience. Kudos to Gulner for crafting a dread-filled tale of misdirection that culminates in a chilling, illuminating finale.
The Beldham stars the talented Katie Parker as Harper, a young mother on the edge. Parker’s portrayal is raw and heart-wrenching, capturing both vulnerability and strength. Patricia Heaton (from The Middle) delivers a rare horror performance as Sadie, whose unflinching, slightly unsettling role is a mystery until Gulner’s writing unveils her purpose. Heaton’s scenes with Parker and co-star Emma Fitzpatrick build a dynamic chemistry essential to the story. Corbin Bernsen also appears, bringing his genre experience to the film, though his role adds minimal depth. Nevertheless, he complements the ensemble well.
This film’s narrative resonates with today’s society, drawing on the layered meaning of “Beldham”—from “beautiful woman” to “old witch”—and creating a chilling exploration of how legends of madness and control have often targeted young mothers. Harper’s bond with her baby, Christine, and the presence of the titular Beldham echo classic dark tales that warned or restrained women, yet the camaraderie between Parker and Fitzpatrick’s characters reminds us that sometimes, what may seem irrational is actually a call for help.
The Beldham employs haunting imagery and sound, with a special nod to the eerie blackbirds, symbols often found in horror. Much like bird-centric horror films such as The Reckoning or the recent V/H/S/Beyond segment “Stork,” The Beldham heightens our fear of winged creatures and what they represent. But the real message here is about mental fragility and the support we need from loved ones. After watching The Beldham, you might just feel the urge to call your mom. I know I did!
