Cold Wallet – A Slick Crypto Thriller That Hits Hard but Feels Like Fool’s Gold - movie review

Raúl Castillo stars in Cold Wallet, a crypto-fueled thriller about loss, desperation, and revenge.
Cold Wallet explores the dark side of digital fortune with a gripping financial revenge thriller.

Cutter Hodierne’s Cold Wallet takes a timely dive into the volatile world of cryptocurrency, blending financial desperation with high-stakes revenge. Loosely based on a true story, the film follows Billy (Raúl Castillo), a father who bets everything on crypto only to lose it all in a devastating crash. With nothing left to lose, he bands together with fellow burned investors to take back what’s theirs in a last-ditch, high-risk heist. Visually stunning with a crystal-clear aesthetic, Cold Wallet captures the allure and danger of digital fortunes, though its execution at times feels more suited for a true-crime documentary than a revenge thriller.

Raúl Castillo delivers a compelling performance as Billy, portraying a man grappling with the weight of his own ambitions and failures. His journey is both tragic and frustrating, as he clings to the belief that fortune favors the bold, even when the odds are stacked against him. His only real support comes from Dom (Tony Cavalero), a jiu-jitsu-loving friend who provides moments of levity, and Eva (Melonie Diaz), whose presence shakes up their world in unexpected ways.

The film’s pacing is steady, keeping audiences engaged as the tension builds. The relevance of crypto and the ever-growing greed of today’s financial landscape make Cold Wallet feel especially timely, offering a Robin Hood-esque tale of the little guy fighting back. However, while the setup is gripping, the ending packs a gut punch that may leave audiences more unsettled than satisfied.

Ultimately, Cold Wallet is an intriguing thriller that highlights the risks of blind faith in digital wealth. While it doesn’t fully capitalize on its potential, it’s a solid watch that could pave the way for more stories exploring the dark side of the crypto world.
