Alexander Aja will always be remembered for introducing us to High Tension. While his other films have been polarizing, his love for horror is undeniable. One unexpected addition to his gritty world is Halle Berry, who steps into a role with a narrative perfectly suited for "Never Let Go", raising anticipation for what she would bring to the film.
The standout performances in Never Let Go belong to Anthony B. Jenkins as Sam and Percy Dags IV as Nolan. These two young actors not only steal the show from the moment they appear but also accomplish the impressive task of carrying the film. Despite a sense of predictability creeping in, writers KC Coughlin and Ryan Grassby cleverly play with your expectations, leaving you questioning what would happen if they let go of those ropes—those endless ropes.
June (aka June Bug) is a mother doing her best to protect her two sons from "the darkness," which will feel familiar to anyone who has lived with someone experiencing dissociative issues. Whether real or imagined, Aja uses all the tricks you'd expect, in a setting that feels almost too familiar. Is Never Let Go a love letter to M. Night Shyamalan? The film has all the elements of a dark fantasy horror, but it also subtly addresses the challenges faced by single Black mothers raising their children alone. While some viewers may focus on the supernatural elements, the film's true horror lies in the fragility of the mind and the potential for its undoing.
