HELL OF A SUMMER Hits Digital Tomorrow as NEON Teases Stacked Home Release

Tomorrow, NEON unleashes the hilarious coming-of-age slasher Hell of a Summer for digital purchase and rental, just a few weeks after its modest theatrical run. Directed by Finn Wolfhard and Billy Bryk—who also co-star alongside Fred Hechinger—the film mixes summer camp nostalgia with bloody kills and awkward laughs, carving out a lane somewhere between Wet Hot American Summer and Friday the 13th.

Since premiering in theaters earlier this April, Hell of a Summer has pulled in just over $3.1 million at the domestic box office, after opening with a respectable $1.8 million. Still, it experienced a steep 94% drop in its third weekend, reflecting its mixed critical reception. It currently holds a 54% on both Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic, with Letterboxd reactions equally split—some fans love the film’s self-aware Gen Z tone, while others found it a bit too safe. That said, PostTrak shows 87% audience positivity and strong recommendability, hinting that the real party might just start at home.

And that’s where Hell of a Summer could thrive. With its irreverent humor, genre throwbacks, and rising star power, the film feels primed for digital success among the same crowd that embraced Bodies Bodies Bodies and Totally Killer. It’s fun, fast, and made for repeat watches—which could help it build cult status well beyond the box office.

NEON also announced that a 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD release is coming July 8, packed with bonus content including cast commentary with Wolfhard, Bryk, and Hechinger, a blooper reel, a “fireside chat,” and more behind-the-scenes fun.

The film stars Fred Hechinger as Jason Hotchberg, a 24-year-old trying to reclaim his youth as a camp counselor—only to realize a masked killer is picking off his teenage coworkers one by one. Also starring Abby Quinn, D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Pardis Saremi, and co-directors Wolfhard and Bryk, Hell of a Summer is both a love letter to camp slashers and a modern comedy with sharp edges.

We caught up with Finn, Billy, and Fred for an exclusive interview about the film’s production, tone, and future. Check it out here.

Hell of a Summer will be available digitally starting April 22. Get your friends, turn off the lights, and cue the chaos—it might just be the perfect horror hangout watch of the spring.
