"Hitting the Mark with "Girl Internet Show: A Kati Kelli Mixtape", Making Its Texas Premiere at Fantastic Fest

"Girl Internet Show: A Kati Kelli Mixtape" makes its Texas premiere at Fantastic Fest

There’s no denying that filmmaker Jane Schoenbrun draws major inspiration from Kati Kelli’s work. Kelli's YouTube series Girl Internet Show was one of the earliest channels to amass a devoted following, thanks to her unique blend of originality and flair. Much like Tim & Eric from the same era, Girl Internet Show was a one-woman production—a mix of reality show, music video, variety show, and pure Kati Kelli.

We remember discovering this morbidly funny show around the same time we were searching for the next big Slender Man craze or stumbling across the Japanese RPG-horror series Gregory Horror Show. Sadly, Kati was taken from us too soon, but now Schoenbrun and Kelli’s widower, Jordan Whipple, have teamed up to release a documentary titled Girl Internet Show: A Kati Kelli Mixtape. The film offers a deeper look into Kati's life and her pioneering influence on today’s viral online culture. It’s hard to imagine TikTok without trailblazers like Kati Kelli and *Girl Internet Show* paving the way.

Girl Internet Show: A Kati Kelli Mixtape will make its Texas premiere at this year’s Fantastic Fest, with both Schoenbrun and Whipple in attendance. It screens on Monday, September 23rd, and all the screening details are ahead. If you catch this one at the festival, be sure to tell them, “Marva sent you!”

Kati Kelli’s work has been described as a blend of surrealism, satire, and deeply personal expression—drawing comparisons to the likes of Tim & Eric, Andy Kaufman, and Carolee Schneemann. Her work delves into themes of identity, body commodification, and the peculiar intimacy of online life. This film is more than just a documentary; it’s a tribute to a visionary artist who challenged the norms of digital media and left an indelible mark on the cultural landscape.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Jordan Wippell, Kati's widower and co-creator of the film, offering personal insights into Kati’s artistic legacy and the making of the documentary.
