"Inside 'Off Ramp': A Journey into Juggalos, Family, and Dark Comedy with Nathan Tape, Scott Turner Schofield, and Jon Oswald"

Horror Movies Uncut recently sat down with filmmaker Nathan Tape and lead actors Scott Turner Schofield and Jon Oswald to discuss their new dark comedy, "Off Ramp." The conversation explored a range of topics, from the peculiar charm of the Insane Clown Posse (ICP) and the enduring appeal of the Juggalo subculture to the film’s central themes of family and acceptance.

"Off Ramp" delves into the underexplored world of Juggalos, a subculture that has been both misunderstood and fiercely celebrated. Our interviewees shared their first encounters with ICP and the surreal world of the Gatherings, annual conventions that continue to thrive despite flying under the mainstream radar. This subculture, with its distinctive music, makeup, and ethos, serves as a backdrop for much of the film's narrative, offering a unique lens through which to view themes of belonging and identity.

The discussion highlighted the film's emphasis on acceptance, particularly regarding the trans community within the Juggalo world. "Off Ramp" reflects the idea that true community transcends superficial differences, embracing a diverse range of individuals who come together under a shared, if unconventional, identity. This sense of acceptance and the formation of an unbreakable bond among the characters mirrors real-life dynamics found within marginalized groups.

The bond between Scott and Jon on set was a standout topic. The camaraderie and sense of connection they experienced while filming seamlessly translated into the on-screen portrayal of a chosen family. "Off Ramp" centers around this concept of family—both the ones we are born into and the ones we build ourselves. It’s a heartfelt exploration of what it means to find a home and kinship in unexpected places.

Nathan Tape also discussed the influences behind the film, noting a particular inspiration from cult classic films that blend dark comedy with gritty realism. The conversation naturally drifted to films like "Gummo," known for their unflinching portrayal of life's eccentricities. "Off Ramp" seeks to capture a similar tone, balancing the bizarre with genuine affection for its characters.

"Off Ramp" will be showing at the Screenland Armour in Kansas City from September 6th to 11th. Fans and newcomers alike are encouraged to check it out and experience this unique film. If it’s not playing near you, make sure to request it through the film’s official website.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Nathan, Scott, and Jon for sharing their insights and making time for this engaging interview. "Off Ramp" is a must-see film this season, blending humor with poignant reflections on family and community. And as always, Whoop Whoop to the Juggalos out there! Make sure to catch this film and be part of the conversation.
