"Meanwhile on Earth" - movie review

“Megan Northam as Elsa in sci-fi film Meanwhile on Earth.”
“Meanwhile on Earth explores isolation and mystery in deep space, led by Megan Northam’s compelling performance as Elsa.”

The fascination with the stars is at an all-time high, with frequent news of contracts between NASA and private companies aiming to explore space. While only time will tell if humanity will ever populate the cosmos, an astronaut’s life brings us closer to that reality. In Meanwhile on Earth, directed by Jérémy Clapin, we follow Elsa (Megan Northam), a young woman anxiously awaiting the return of her brother Franck (voiced by Sébastien Pouderoux), lost in the depths of space. Meanwhile on Earth is a visually stunning sci-fi horror that mixes fear with imagination, and Northam delivers a commendable performance as both the last hope for her brother’s return and possibly the savior of humanity.

The film evokes classic modern sci-fi, with themes of possession, alien technology, and a malignant presence driving the tension. At the heart of Meanwhile on Earth is Northam’s performance, as she navigates Elsa’s unfortunate journey with grace. Elsa’s task-ridden path, filled with anxiety, mirrors a deeper story about politics, isolation, and despair. Northam and Clapin create a powerful partnership that eases viewers in before plunging them into the madness of what lies ahead.

The overall look of Meanwhile on Earth reflects the unique cinematic vision often seen in French filmmaking. Adding to this visual strength is the talent of cinematographer Robrecht Heyvaert, known for his work on both major features and acclaimed indie films. Together, this trio crafts a stunning, immersive experience that draws viewers into a journey of mind and sound.

The film’s pacing may feel slow to some, but I found it appropriate for the mystery it unravels. Meanwhile on Earth balances grotesque moments with unsettling scenes, creating a captivating rhythm that kept me enthralled. From start to finish, this is a well-crafted sci-fi gem and a standout for the genre this year.
