Our FilmQuest 24' preview

The World Premiere of Joanna Tsanis’ highly anticipated feature debut The Killgrin takes center stage at FilmQuest.

It’s hard to believe November is just around the corner, and we’re still wrapping up coverage for October’s film festivals. Today, FilmQuest kicks off in Provo, Utah, at the Velour Live Music Gallery. While some of the festival’s featured films are ones HMU has been plugging for a while—like Island Between Tides, The Daemon, and BA—there are also many new films we’ll be spotlighting, including a showcase of the best short films from the festival. As the event kicks off in just a few hours, here’s a look at the films we’re excited to see at this year’s FilmQuest.

One of the main highlights at FilmQuest is the animated features. We’re particularly excited for Denver Jackson’s The Worlds Divide, an epic project from Jackson, who wrote, illustrated, composed, and directed the film. Set in the world of Esluna, this film promises to be a standout. Also we are really excited for the World Premiere of the highly anticipated feature debut from Joanna Tsanis The Killgrin.

Faux-umentaries have had a big year, and Hunting Matthew Nichols is one we’ve recently mentioned. The film follows a filmmaker and a young woman searching for answers about her missing brother and his best friend, with hints of ritual killings. This Blair Witch-style faux-umentary will definitely be on many watchlists. We’ll have more details plus an interview with the filmmaker.

Another highly anticipated film is Craig Ouellette’s survival thriller Straight On Til Morning. This story of two dreamers on a road trip gone horribly wrong, with Maria Olsen leading a vile family, promises to keep audiences on edge. Additionally, sci-fi comedy Tim Travers & the Time Travelers Paradox looks like a fun ride, with genre legends making cameos.

We’re also excited to catch a few films we missed at other festivals, like the sleep research thriller SOMNIUM, the faux-documentary Strange Harvest: Occult Murder in the Inland Empire, and others like Decibel and Complex Forms. Plus, there are some crossovers from the Austin Film Festival, including The Beldham and Shaman. It’s shaping up to be a true celebration of genre films and a fantastic way to close out the month.

Stay tuned for more FilmQuest coverage, and check out the official details on the festival’s kick-off below!
