Hitting on demand tomorrow is the thriller from Princeton James, "Queen Rising." This revenge-laced thriller stars April Hale as Maddison, a young woman with a terrible habit of attracting devious men. After countless heartbreaks and dealing with the responsibility of raising her younger sister after their parents' tragic deaths, she uses a dark inner strength to take no nonsense from anyone.
"Queen Rising" is an astute revenge thriller that empowers women to no longer stand for abusive relationships in their lives. Princeton James, along with writers Allison Chaney and Henry E. Reaves III, create an anti-hero with Hale's character Maddison. You are drawn into a world where she experiences nothing but hateful men. Lies, abuse, and even murder turn her into a hardworking, independent person. Like many of us, she sometimes unwillingly attracts the exact opposite of what she wants in a partner. For a young girl who has experienced so much turmoil, it makes sense that she would latch onto a relationship no matter how toxic. The narrative does a great job of painting Maddison as a victim until a line is crossed. What happens from there provides a nice shock, adding great elements you would find in any solid mystery slasher.
"Queen Rising" dragged out a little too much on the romance aspects, making the film feel a bit too similar to the cult-following "Lifetime thriller" films from the late nineties and early 2000s. There were plenty of standout moments that, if placed closer together, would have made "Queen Rising" move at a better pace. Still, there is an audience for the film, and it brings great awareness to the horrors women have always faced while dating. Hale has great potential, and the overall writing was better than perceived. Looking for a good revenge thriller to watch with the girls? "Queen Rising" is your feature.
