Shudder is bringing a chilling new horror experience to audiences with FRÉWAKA, the first-ever Irish-language horror film. From Aislinn Clarke, the acclaimed director behind The Devil’s Doorway, FRÉWAKA is set to make its exclusive streaming debut on April 25 as part of Shudder’s Halfway to Halloween celebration.
Premiering at the 2024 Locarno Film Festival and making its U.K. debut at the BFI London Film Festival, FRÉWAKA blends folk horror with an unsettling examination of generational trauma. Emily Gotto, Senior Vice President of Acquisitions and Production at Shudder, praised the film’s innovative approach:

The film follows home care worker Shoo (Clare Monnelly), who is sent to a remote village to care for an agoraphobic woman (Bríd Ní Neachtain). The woman fears both her neighbors and the Na Sídhe—sinister entities she believes abducted her decades ago. As their relationship deepens, Shoo is drawn into the woman’s paranoia, superstitions, and rituals, forcing her to confront horrors from her own past.
Written and directed by Clarke, FRÉWAKA is produced by Diarmuid Lavery (Doineann) and Patrick O’Neill (Kneecap), with executive producers Máire Ní Chonláin, Deirbhile Ní Churraighín, Greg Martin, and Michael Hewitt.
